What recent guests emphasize

Balanced stay with caring staff and convenient mainland location

Recent guests highlight attentive and friendly staff, clean and comfortable rooms, and a peaceful setting away from the island. Mixed reviews mention location drawbacks and some service limitations to consider.

Guests often praise

  • Welcoming, attentive, and accommodating staff providing home-cooked meals and helpful service.
  • Clean, comfortable rooms with air conditioning and included breakfast featuring fresh fruit and coffee.
  • Peaceful, laid-back atmosphere in a quiet residential neighborhood surrounded by greenery.
  • Reasonable pricing for accommodation and meals compared to island options.
  • Convenient free Wi-Fi and parking options appreciated by visitors.

Worth knowing

  • Hotel is located in Chiquilá on the mainland, not on Holbox Island, requiring daily ferry trips to reach the island.
  • Breakfast is only partially included; some guests note additional charges for items like eggs or "a la carte" options.
  • Water pressure issues in showers and slow Wi-Fi reported by some guests.
  • Nearby town can be noisy at night and lacks diverse dining options.
  • Food and drinks on-site may be relatively pricey, and tipping policies were unclear for some visitors.

Best for

  • Travelers seeking a quiet, authentic mainland base close to ferry access for Holbox Island.
  • Visitors preferring friendly, home-style hospitality and personalized meals.
  • Budget-conscious guests looking for affordable lodging outside tourist hotspots.
  • Those who value simple, clean accommodations with essential amenities.

About this property

Welcome to Mayan Villas Hotel

Mayan Villas Hotel offers bright suites in a relaxed setting on Calle Herrera y Castellanos in the town of Lazaro Cardenas, near Chiquilá. The property is surrounded by lush greenery and provides amenities such as free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, free parking, and an on-site Mexican restaurant and bar. Some rooms include kitchens, and the hotel is pet- and kid-friendly, though it does not offer fitness facilities.

The hotel’s location is convenient for travelers looking to explore the nearby natural attractions, including Playa Punta Cocos, Playa Holbox, and Punta Mosquito—all known for their beautiful shorelines, flamingo sightings, and water activities. However, it is important to note that the property is not located on Holbox Island itself but in the mainland town of Chiquilá, which requires a ferry ride to reach the island. Guests should be prepared for a quieter, less developed neighborhood compared to more tourist-centric areas.

Guest reviews describe the staff as accommodating and attentive, with positive mentions of homemade meals and helpful service. Some reviews raise concerns about location and basic room features, such as slow Wi-Fi, limited breakfast options, and occasional maintenance issues. The hotel is seen as a practical choice for those seeking authentic experiences away from the more commercialized island, though it may not suit travelers expecting luxury or a lively nightlife.

With a moderate 3.6 rating based on over 160 reviews, Mayan Villas Hotel appeals primarily to budget-conscious visitors who value a quiet environment and easy access to nearby ferry services. Prospective guests should consider the local surroundings and transportation logistics before booking, while those willing to accept a more modest accommodation may find it a good base for exploring the region.

My partner surprise me with a trip to Holbox island but he got fooled by the name of this hotel is using and the pictures as well. True he is not the best searcher but they should not use Holbox name. IT IS NOT ON HOLBOX ISLAND!! And we had to pay more money for ferry every day to actually go to the island. Poor breakfast choice. At least you want to pay more for "a la carte". I don't think they clean the floor in the bathroom. I big chunk of hair was at the drainage in the shower. Not the best when you have a toddler who touch and explore everything. Good for transit if you got there late and there are no ferry anymore. Plus.. there are no Mayan villas... just normal rooms in 2 floor buildings.

Very accommodating staff. The town was much poorer than we anticipated and there were few food options but the staff made us a wonderful meal of fresh fish. Price was great. Town was very noisey at night so pack ear plugs but a much more authentic opinion option than staying in the super tourist Hol Box over night.

The hotel and staff deserve 5 stars. The location, however, is not good. If you don't mind being in a non-developed neighborhood, this place is very good. Shout out to the home-made meals.

Very pleasant and attentive hosts. Comfortable room and bed in simple Mexican village. Fruit and coffee for breakfast included, prepared excellent fish dinner for reasonable price. Good option for those who prefer not to stay on the island and take ferry or tour from Chiquilla.

Rooms were good. The only problem I have is that they don’t feed the two dogs that they have. The lady ignored those poor babies crying for food. Whenever we feed them they wouldn’t even chew the food because of how hungry they were. No food and no water for God knows how long. Please please feed the dogs !

Found this place by accident after missing the last ferry to Holbox. Rooms very clean and with air con. The team were very welcoming, helpful and took great care of us! The inclusive breakfast of fresh fruit, eggs and coffee was delicious and we even got a lift to the ferry the next morning!

The staff were amazingly friendly. They allowed us to check in around 11pm. They served us breakfast of toast and coffee in the room. The parking situation is pretty tight with not that many places. Also, the shower had blocked pipes which is common in Yucatan. But it meant there was only a tiny trickle of cold water to shower with.

Nice place to stay in Chiquila, price is reasonable but food and drinks on-site is rather pricey. Food was delicious, however, tip was already added to our meal without it being mentioned, so be careful. Rooms were clean and all worked well, except the AC. Staff was friendly and attentive. Wifi was fairly slow. At check-in, we were told breakfast was included - however later on, it was only "semi-included" and there was a surcharge to order eggs. Simple fruit and toast otherwise with coffee or tea. Parking is limited, we fit our 2 cars in the entrance.
